The voice of our students October 2015 (1)

Good evening,
how are you? Today I will introduce you to our teacher evaluation.
Every three month we ask our students to rate the quality of their teachers lessons.
Based on students  evaluation, the teachers rank (A-B-C) will be calculated and accordingly the payrate changes.

Besides the evaluation, some of the students also share their opinion about their teachers with us. Today, I want to deliver an insight of the voices of our students from our last evaluation. The original comments were in Japanese, we have translated them into English for you. This is Part 1.

I hope those comments will be useful for you.

See you soon!

Good teacher:
His lessons have a sense of dedicated stability. His notes are comprehensive and, I believe, he teaches me correct English. In addition, he always uses icebreakers to help me switch my brain into the English “mode” at the beginning of the class and answers my questions carefully when we read the textbook. He is a very good teacher. I look forward to continuing our classes.

Good teacher:
I can learn a lot in his class, because he accurately corrects my grammatical mistakes and points out the vocabulary nuances even in a casual conversation.

Good teacher:
He always gives me homework, so I can effortlessly keep my motivation. The teacher accurately takes class notes, so I can remember what we talked about, even if there is a long break between the classes. I am very satisfied with the teacher’s attitude to his work and his approach to communication. In addition, his class memos are cordial, so I always look forward to reading them. Sometimes he leaves an inspiring comment and I reread it several times.

Good teacher:
She assigns homework and topics for essays in English and I think I can learn a lot from her.

To teacher:
The teacher focuses on providing me with the opportunity to speak, however, because of that we do not get much done with the textbook and the class does not proceed smoothly. Maybe this is the right way to study, but I am not sure.

Good teacher:
I am studying Italian with this teachers and he teaches me which expressions are natural for Italians to use in certain situations. His explanations are easy to understand and are very practical. He patently teaches me grammar, so many things that were ambiguous to me before became quite clear. He is very erudite and knows well the subjects of culture, history, mythology and etc. He doesn’t just teach me the language, but also the general knowledge of European culture. His classes provide me with strong intellectual stimulation and I believe that he is a great teacher. I look forward to continuing our classes in the future.

Good teacher:
When we had class, she introduced some topics and we did discussion based on those.

Good teacher:
I have been taking classes with this teacher for a long time. I believe my English skills have improved dramatically thanks to her.

To teacher:
I understand that the teacher is busy with taking care of their children, but sometimes the comments I get from this teacher are late or I would not get them at all.

Good teacher:
I am grateful for this class, because the teacher patiently listens to me speaking and always teaches me useful expressions. He also tries to create the maximum number of opportunities for me to speak up.

To teacher:
Maybe the teacher is busy recently, but last week despite sending me an article, they did not cover it in class and the class turned into an easy chitchat. Nevertheless, the teacher is friendly and easy to talk to, so I will continue taking the class for now, while considering what to do afterwards. The class memos are just only memos, so I do not think it is necessary to send them to me each time.

To teacher:
I am taking this teacher’s classes instead of my previous teacher (my previous teacher had to change schedule). The new teacher is friendly and speaks about many interesting things. However, I felt the previous teacher was better at using the textbook and adjusting the lessons to my level and I feel unsatisfied. I also tried other teachers, and I understand that maybe I cannot judge just by one or two lessons, but honestly I still have not found the right teacher for me.

Good teacher:
He is very friendly and always carefully listens to me. Our classes proceed in a free conversation style and he selects interesting topics for us to base the discussion on and creates an opportunity to exchange opinions. On the other hand he also changes the topic conversation to my family, so it makes the lessons fun for me.
I look forward to taking his classes in the future.

Good teacher:
I think, this teacher is a very patient person. He has good intuition, so he can precisely correct my bad English by guessing my intentions.

To teacher:
I am gradually starting to get used to the quickly paced English conversation.
So I think it is not necessary for the teacher to speak slowly on purpose. The topics that they prepare are quite interesting, but sometimes difficult for me.

Good teacher:
I can feel that the teacher is making an attempt to increase my motivation. She is carefully adjusting the classes to my level, so I think I will continue taking classes in the future.

Good teacher:
The atmosphere of our conversations is fun. The teacher writes out my mistakes in letters, so I can review and learn afterwards as well. I think my English skills have improved a little. I believe that she is a very good teacher: she is intelligent and can sense the mood well.

Good teacher:
For beginners of English language, it is sometimes necessary to speak Japanese with the teacher. She does her best to do explanations in English as much as possible, and if she needs to use Japanese, she uses it just a little. Sometimes there are words that the teacher is unfamiliar with in Japanese and we cannot communicate, in this case we call my mother and she helps us to understand each other. We repeated the learned things from the last lesson, using that as a intro for the new lesson. However,I wanted to change the lesson style and asked her to change starting from the next lesson. It helped me a lot that she willingly listened to my wish.

To teacher:
It would be helpful if the teacher learned how to operate Google Hangouts. They did not know how to use the file attachment function in Google Hangouts.

Good teacher:
The teacher always selects interesting news articles and studying with her deepens my knowledge in a variety of genres. As a result, I could deepen my understanding of fields that I would not touch usually. I have a very good impression of her.
Good teacher:
She is a very nice teacher and I always learn something valuable from her. She usually prepares some topics for our class and she sends me online articles prior to each lesson. I always enjoy her lessons.

Good teacher:
She is very friendly and easy to talk to.

To teacher:
The teacher did not appear enthusiastic at all. They seemed gloomy. The feedback was just enumerated list and there were no comments at all. It did not seem to me that the teacher wanted to teach me.

Good teacher:
She is very friendly and I think she is a really good teacher. Her way of leading the class is skillful, so she comes across as a real professional.
Good teacher:
She helped me in various fields, such as medical English, presentations, and general conversation. It is a pity that her time for online classes is quite limited due to other work.

To teacher:
Despite the fact that the teacher could speak Japanese, our class had a feeling of a strained mood, and was uneasy. People can come up with great ideas when they are able to relax. I could not relax, and the pace of the class also was too fast. In my case, I tend to get a sense of security relying on the fact that the teacher can speak Japanese, but it might not be a good thing. On the contrary, the fact that the teacher could explain the subtle nuances in Japanese was a good thing. However, it seemed to me as I was talking with a Japanese person, who can speak English rather than talking with a native speaker, which made me feel uncomfortable.
